1 . پیستون یا دیافراگم "Piston and diaphragm"
هردو اینها 2 طرح شبیه به هم برای مرحله اول هستند که هدف مشابهی را دنبال میکنند . یکی از آنها پیستونی سخت و دیگری دیافراگمی قابل انعطاف برای حرکت دادن هوا است . هر دوی این مکانیسمها دهه هاست که وجود دارند و عملکردشان به اثبات رسیده است . اگرچه سیستم دیافراگم اغلب توسط غواصانی ترجیح داده میشود که به تعداد دفعات زیاد در آبهای سرد و یا آلوده غواصی میکنند .

2. نامتعادل، متعادل شده، فوق متعادل " Unbalanced, balanced or overbalanced "
رگلاتورهای نامتعادل ارزان قیمت هستند ولی برای تغییرات فشار درون سیلندر غواصی متعادل نیستند . این یعنی که با کم شدن فشار درون سیلندر عملکرد آنها نیز تغییر میکند که شامل پائین آمدن عقربه گیج فشار زیر آبی "SPG" و مقاومت تنفسی افزایش پیدا میکند . رگلاتورهای متعادل شده توانائی ثابت نگه داشتن فشار متوسط را دارند بدون اینکه فشار درون سیلندر بر روی آنها تاثیر گذار باشد . بنابر این تنفس در فشار 35 باری سیلندر همانند فشار 200 باری آن، راحت می باشد . رگلاتورهای فوق متعادل در یک مرحله بیشتر فشار متوسط را در عمق افزایش داده و تراکم گاز را بیشتر میکنند .

3 . تعداد خروجیها "Number of ports"
خروجیهای بیشتر بمعنی شلنگهای بیشتر و عملکرد بیشتر است . برخی از رگلاتورها تنها یک خروجی پر فشار و تعداد کمی خروجی کم فشار دارند . برای غواصان عادی شاید این تعداد کافی باشد ولی برای غواصانی که از درای سوت و یا از منابع هوائی اضافی استفاده میکنند تعداد بیشتری مورد نیاز است .

4 . اتصال دهنده یوک و یا دین " DIN vs. yoke "
اتصال دهنده یوک در تمامی شیرهای K شکل استاندارد امروزی که در سیلندرهای آلومینیومی 12 لیتری وجود دارند استفاده شده و به دور شیر قرار میگیرد ، در حالی که اتصال دهنده دین به درون شیرهای معمولی دین در سیلندر پیچانده میشوند . اتصال دهنده های دین با ایمنی بیشتری به شیر متصل شده و برای استفاده با سیلندرهائی با فشار بالا طراحی شده اند .

5 . عایق محیطی " Environmental kits "
این نوع مکانیسم آب را از درون رگلاتور دور نگه میدارد . ممانعت از ورود آلودگی موجود در آبهای آلوده و یا انجماد در آبهای سرد از عملکردهای آن است . خارج نگه داشتن آلودگی از درون رگلاتور مراقبت کمتری را برای آن نیاز دارد و از انجماد قطعات درونی در آب یخ جلوگیری میکند .
